History of Towing
Did you know that the first Tow Truck was first thought of back in 1908 by Ferdinand Porche of Austro Daimler for the Austro Hungarian Army? Then Ernest Holmes, a business and inventor of Chattanooga TN, took the idea further in 1916 by creating the flatbed truck and winch. After going through the process of patenting the inventions, he went on to commercially manufacturing them.
So why did Ernest Holmes fall upon this idea for the need to a tow truck in the first place? Well the story goes that he was helping a friend get a vehicle out of a pond. At the time, there was no way to pull the vehicle out besides by hand with a group of people. Naturally, cars are not light and therefore it ended up requiring a group of eight men with ropes and blocks to get the vehicle out of the water. After that day, Holmes went back home knowing there had to be a better way.
So he tinkered and ended up creating a flatbed truck and winch. He knew this could be used by the masses all over the country, so he would create a factory to build this invention on a large scale and sell them all over the country. Thus, tow trucks were born and became widely available.
Today, all has changed there are different types of Tow Trucks, Light Duty Tow trucks, Car Carrier Tow Truck, Wrecker s Tow trucks, Breakdown Tow Trucks, Heavy Duty Tow Trucks, and Dragging Wagons. All these Tow Trucks use special equipment on the back of their trucks to load and pull cars and trucks.
